About the product
Chaginza Houjicha is an unusual hojicha made from the stems of Chaginza's green tea. It resembles kukicha in raw material and feel but is roasted in the same style as a classic hojicha.
The roasting results in an amber-coloured cup with soft warmth, low astringency, and aromas leaning towards roasted grains, nuts, and mild caramel. The stems make the expression lighter and airier than a leaf-based hojicha, without losing the roasted character.
Brew Chaginza Houjicha with 3 grams of tea, 100°C water, and a steeping time of 30-60 seconds. It tolerates hot water better than many green teas and becomes smooth in the cup without quickly turning bitter.
Drink it with rice dishes, roasted food, dark chocolate, fika (coffee break), or as a calming evening cup when you want a roasted Japanese tea with warmth, clear aroma, and a smooth finish.
When we choose a roasted tea for the range, it has to serve a clear purpose. Hojicha does exactly that: it brings warmth and aroma without feeling sharp, and makes it easy to choose tea even later in the day.
That is why it belongs at Nekko Kitchen. Not as an alternative to sencha, but as the quieter voice in the range: darker in tone, softer in expression, and easy to live with.

In practice, the cup feels soft, rounded, and calm. The aromas lean toward toasted wood, grain, and a light nuttiness, while bitterness and astringency stay low.
A warm roasted aroma that feels more comforting than green or grassy.
The body is rounded and soft, with light sweetness and a discreet touch of umami.
The cup fades out cleanly and gently, with very low bitterness and almost no sharpness.

Hojicha works especially well when you want tea to lower the pace rather than sharpen attention.

This hojicha is selected to give the range a softer, darker direction: roasted, calm, and especially easy to return to later in the day. It adds warmth, not just variation.
Hojicha often begins as sencha or bancha, but becomes something quite different once the leaves are roasted over high heat.
Roasting shifts the expression from fresh plant character toward warmer notes of grain, wood, and nuttiness.
The process creates a softer cup where tannins and sharpness feel lower than in many other Japanese green teas.
This is a tea that is easy to return to when you want presence without intensity.
Drink it warm in a slightly larger cup when you want the aroma to open up.
Let it sit beside something simple to eat, like toasted rice, crackers, or something lightly savory.
It works especially well in the evening when you want to end the day with something soft rather than energizing.

Rumstemperatur.
